The Pilgrims
The Puritans wished to “purify” the church of England. The Pilgrims first left England to settle in Leyden, Holland. In 1620 the Pilgrims ship, the Mayflower, landed at Plymouth, in the new world. Among those on the ship with the Pilgrims were some non-Separatist friends, the “Strangers”, John Carver, the first governor of the Pilgrims, and William Bradford, remembered as the “Father of American History”. The Mayflower Compact was signed by Pilgrims and Strangers to ensure law and order in Plymouth.
The Great Awakening
Philipp Spener began the Pietist movement in Germany in the mid- to late-1600s.
The Great Awakening in England began in the mid-1700s. John Wesley founded the Methodist church. Robert Raikes started Sunday schools. William Wilberforce led the movement in British Parliament to abolish slavery. William Carey, David Livingstone, and J Hudson Taylor were all missionaries that helped spread the revival from England all over the world. In America, George Whitefield is remembered as the most well-known preacher of the Great Awakening, eventhough Jonathan Edwards gave the famous sermon “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God”.
